Mesa Verde National Park

Jessica, founder and owner of Durango.comMesa Verde National Park is outstanding! It is amazing to think the Peubloans built their homes along the cliffs around 500 A.D. Then inexpiably they moved. You will be amazed how industrious the Puebloans were. I remember seeing the pictures of Mesa Verde in my geography book as a kid but seeing it in person is remarkable. A sight you will never forget!  View more scenes in the Mesa Verde Photo Gallery featuring photos taken by "moi."

Durango hiking

Katie of Durango.comDurango has some of the best and most rewarding hiking!  My personal favorite, which is also a great hike for visitors, is the hike to Spud Lake. It’s easily accessible from Hwy 550 north of Durango. It’s an easy hike that begins at a beautiful lily pond. The hike is about 1 mile to Spud Lake and the scenery is beautiful once you get there.  You’ll notice a large beaver pond where you can check out the fallen aspens and even feel the beaver tooth marks in the trees. Once you pass the beaver pond, you’re almost to Spud Lake. You’ll be amazed at the stillness of the water and the calm sounds of the mountains. It’s the perfect place for a picnic or a swim in the lake on a hot July afternoon.

Outlaw Tours Jeep Tour

Jessica, founder and owner of Durango.comI took a Jeep Tour with Outlaw Tours. What an adventure! Keith drove us deep and up into the San Juan forest to the top of canyon. The view was breathtaking!! Then we checked out some gold mines and ghost towns. The scenery was amazing – wildflowers, waterfalls and wildlife. A jeep tour is the best way to see the Rocky Mountains!

Durango Farmers Market

Jessica, founder and owner of Durango.comI just love strolling through the farmers market on Saturday mornings throughout the spring, summer and fall in Durango. I get almost all my produce from the farmers market. One thing I love about Durango is everyone’s passion for green, healthy living.  I know I’m purchasing organic local produce when shopping at the Farmer’s Market. I also like browsing through the other goods such as pottery, candles, crafts, honey and much more.

Vallecito Lake

Carving NutMy favorite thing to do in Durango is have a great meal at one of Durango's unique restaurants then drive out to Vallecito Lake to look at the sculptures carved out of damaged trees from a 2002 forest fire. As you drive around the lake, you will see the tree carvings which were done by artist Chad Haspels. The short 18-mile drive out to Vallecito Lake is relaxing. There are also places to go horseback riding with views of Vallecito Lake. A lot of people visit Durango to go fishing. They fish the river, but never think of going to Vallecito Lake, but I think it is one of the best fishing spots in the Durango area. Check the hunting season guides, because Vallecito Lake also has popular places for hunting.

HoliDAZZLE

Katie of Durango.comThe holiday season is such a charming time in Durango.  Everything is so beautiful, friendly and festive.  The downtown shops compete in a window display competition so you’re sure to see lots of lights and decorations dazzling downtown Durango.  The business district always releases a holiday CD and put together fun events, competitions and store giveaways.  My favorite part about HOLiDAZZLE is Noel Night, downtown’s dedicated shopping day.  It’s usually the first Friday in December, the stores are open late and there is fun entertainment all over downtown.  The perfect way to kick off the holiday season!
