Saturday morning in downtown Durango hums with life as the shops and cafes open a new day. The air is delicately scented with coffee and breakfast aromas, as crowds cluster in the First National Bank parking lot on 8 th Street for the Durango Farmer’s Market.

The Farmer’s Market is the place to be in Durango from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. each Saturday, running spring through fall. Visitors can purchase healthy organic produce grown locally. The market is not limited to produce, though. Vendors sell a delectable assortment of natural wellness products from herbs, candles, pottery, soap, wheatgrass juice, wool, honey, farmstead cheese, fresh baked goods, smoothies, crafts, and much more!

Durango Farmer’s Market strives to infuse local commerce rather than supporting big corporations and foreign labor. All of the products featured in the market have been made in the Four Corners region.

  Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad

Durango Railfest

The Durango Railfest is an annual event that celebrates all that goes by rail. Durango is the ideal location to remember the heady days of railroading. After all, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has been in continuous operation for over a century. What better place to remember railroading than a place that has never forgotten it? Rare and unique railroad equipment and cars are the stars at the Durango Railfest. The Denver and Rio Grande's Galloping Goose is one rail star not to be missed. An 1875 wood fired locomotive is another example of the equipment that appears at the Railfest. This locomotive makes special excursions on the D&SNGR. This an event for all to enjoy, especially railfans.

  Bicycle Classic

Iron Horse Bicycle Classic

The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic started as a contest between two brothers, Tom and Jim Mayer. Jim, Tom’s older brother, was a train engineer on the iron horse. Everyday when the train which Jim was conducting passed their home, Tom would jump on his 10 speed bike and pedal 50 miles over the two mountain passes in an effort to beat this brother. As the train pulled into the Silverton station one day in 1971, Jim’s young brother was waiting his arrival – sweating and smiling. The following year, Tom and friend, Ed Zink along with 36 cyclists joined the contest which today is called the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic.
