Rafting season is just around the corner on the Animas River! As this winter’s heavy snowfalls melts into spring, water levels will swell and help create what will soon be an exciting season of fun and river adventures!
Here are 3 tips to keep in mind before you get ready to ride the rapids:
1. Pick the right trip for your group.
If this is your first time on the river, you might prefer to choose a half-day adventure that gives you a taste of what the water has to offer. It’s also wise to consider factors like age, ability, fitness level, swimming capabilities and your desired challenge.
2. Dress for the best.
Dress for comfort and function, as you WILL get wet. When riding the wild waters, choose comfortable, loose-fitting items made of cotton or a quick-drying fabric. A pair of shorts and a comfy tee would do just right. Or, consider wearing a swimsuit for the occasion. Instead of your favorite flip flops, consider a waterproof outdoors-style sandal with secure straps.
You may want to bring sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses with a strap, waterproof cameras, a water bottle, hats and a change of clothes with a jacket in case it’s chilly at the end of the trip.
3. Know what to expect before you launch.
Can I just sit and hold on? If this sounds familiar, chances are a beginner rafting trip is for you. These “entry level” experiences let the guide to most of the work so you can kick back and relax.
If you’re looking for a more involved experience, consider and intermediate or advanced trip. You’ll be required to help paddle and maneuver the boat by working with fellow passengers and following commands from the guide.
