The chilly winter weather is starting to melt into spring and Easter is on it’s way. If you are planning to be in Durango Easter weekend, we challenge you to celebrate in a unique and memorable way. Here are a few ideas to help you plan a unique Easter in Durango.
1.) The Durango Easter Train Ride
The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad often offers special themed journeys for holidays. Easter in Durango is no exception. For Easter they will offer a ride aboard the Easter Beagle Express, a family friendly trip inspired by Snoopy, Charlie Brown and your other favorite Peanuts characters.
As the train travels along the Animas River, passengers will enjoy live music, Easter crafts, refreshments, games and much more. After arriving in Cascade Canyon in the San Juan National Forest you will disembark and get a chance to meet the Easter Bunny as well as Snoopy the Easter Beagle. During the trip home the on-board musician will read from the book “It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown!”
2.) Brunch at A Durango Restaurant
Treat yourself to a delicious Easter Sunday brunch at one of the excellent restaurants in Durango. For example, the Raider Ridge Café offers a fantastic brunch menu with fresh and locally sourced food. The Diamond Belle Saloon in the Strater Hotel also serves a Sunday brunch and has an Old West atmosphere. Carver Brewing Co. is another Durango restaurant known for their fantastic brunch food. Regardless of which you choose, make sure that you make a reservation. Booking a Easter Sunday brunch will be a very popular idea!
3.) Go on a Fishing Trip
Perhaps you want to relax on Easter weekend by wading in the Animas River and catching some fish. The beautiful cold and clear waters of Durango offer amazing trout fishing, so check out one of the companies offering expeditions deep into the mountain rivers and alpine lakes. Duranglers provides respectable guided tours as well as has informative fishing reports that can help you prepare for your big catch.
4.) Easter Sunday Hike and Picnic
Another great activity to enjoy with the whole family on Easter Sunday is a hike and picnic. Pick up some yummy treats from Nature’s Oasis and put together a basket of sandwiches, fruit and cookies to enjoy at a scenic lookout or park. Don’t forget to bring along a few chocolate Easter treats with you too! Vallecito Lake is another gorgeous spot for a picnic a midst natural beauty. Or if you prefer a flatter trail, take a walk along the Animas River Trail and find a quiet spot on the banks of the river to stop for a meal.
5.) Go Horseback Riding
Celebrate Easter in Durango a nontraditional route. Horseback riding is a sure way to make a memorable holiday and great story when coworkers ask how you spent your holiday. Durango offers a number of fantastic horseback riding options, from short two hour treks to full day trips.
