  • Class II: Slightly bigger waves (up to 3 feet) and easy-to-navigate rapids with wide, open channels.
  • Class III: Stronger currents, narrow passages, and unpredictable waves that can easily swamp an open canoe.
  • Class IV: Long and challenging, sometimes blocked by obstacles that may require scouting from the shore before attempting.
  • Class V: Extremely difficult and dangerous, with powerful, violent rapids that can pose serious risks even to experienced rafters.
  • Class VI: Considered unrunnable and too hazardous to attempt.

Durango’s Whitewater Park

Durango’s very own whitewater park is located adjacent to Santa Rita Park. It’s an artificial area of the river that includes rapids designed to make for the ideal rafting experience at any water level. This is accomplished by shifting the natural banks and rocks just enough to create some permanent water features. This area of the Animas is not for beginners; it is home to a “world class” water feature for advanced rafters and kayakers.

The Santa Rita Whitewater Park is where the noteworthy Smelter rapid is located. You’ll find a permanent slalom course here, where the Durango Whitewater Club jas trained several US Kayak Team members. Other notable whitewater features here include Corner Pocket, Ponderosa Wave, and Clocktower Hole.
