Durango, Colorado is not only a great destination for human visitors – it’s also a paradise for man's best friend. There are countless mountain trails that are perfect for walking, exploring, and sniffing, plus are lakes for swimming, dog parks for running around, and lots of sticks to fetch in the river. Many cafes and restaurants have outdoor patios where dogs can rest and the friendly staff will offer bowls of water. Plus, there are many Durango hotels that allow dogs where you and your pooch can stay in comfort. If you are looking for a place to enjoy a getaway with man’s best friend, you’ll love Durango.
A Good 'ol Dog Walk
Take a walk down the seven-mile-long Animas River Trail, a scenic paved pathway running alongside the Animas River. Horse Gulch Trail System is another lovely place for a walk and is very popular with dog visitors to Durango and their owners. It's one of our favorites. Dalla Mountain Park is a beautiful National Forest area which has great pet friendly policies. The trails are well marked and the views are extraordinary. Dogs are allowed to be off-leash as long as they are under voice control.
Cool off in one of the several great bodies of water that your dog will enjoy. Paddle boarding on the Animas is a great activity if your dog is the adventuring type. Vallecito Lake is a gorgeous natural lake 18 miles east of Durango. In the summer you can rent a pontoon boat at Doc’s Marina and your dogs are allowed on board for an additional $20 fee.
Durango Dog Park
Visit the Durango Dog Park, a five-acre area where dogs can run free, frolic and swim in the river. It’s within easy walking distance from downtown Durango, and even closer to one of our favorite pet friendly hotels, the Doubletree. You can park in a lot on the corner of highway 160 & El Camino Del Rio.
Grab A Bite
Downtown Durango is a great place to explore with your dog, and there are several pet friendly patios at restaurants that you can both enjoy. You'll pass by many businesses offering dog treats and water bowls for well behaved canines on the way. One of our favorite places to stop by is Maria's Bookshop.
If you want to bring your dog along with you on your next visit, you’ll have many choices when it comes to Durango lodging. There are quite a few pet friendly hotels & vacation rentals in Durango where you can stay with your four-legged buddy. O-Bar-O Cabins is a great option, as they don’t just tolerate dogs – they welcome them with comfy dog beds, yummy treats and a dog park where they can run and play.
The Rochester Hotel allows dogs in certain rooms for an additional fee of $20 per night. Also, the Doubletree Hotel allows dogs for a $15 per night fee and is close to the Animas River Trail. Of course, camping is also a great dog friendly option as well if the weather is warm. Enjoy your trip to Durango and make some great memories with your furry friend!
