With the La Plata County Humane Society’s Bark and Wine event just a few short weeks away, now is the perfect time to “paws” to think about why dogs love Durango.
With an average of 300 days of sunshine here each year, Durango, Colorado, is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts – including those on two OR four legs. Here is some information that might come in handy when you’re planning your next dog-friendly Durango vacation
Things to Do
Hiking: You’ll find thousands of miles of trails in and around the Durango area. Lots of local dogs and their owners often head out on the paved Animas River Greenway trail. You’ll see lots of leashed pets on the greenway, which features pet-friendly features like waste stations with bag dispensers and water fountains for people and pets. We love the Horse Gulch Trails and Vallicito Lake, and chances are Fido will love exploring these areas with you, too. See more about hiking in Durango.
Dining: Unless you’re traveling with a service animal, meals with your best furry friend will be limited to restaurants with patios. Don’t worry though – al fresco dining is de rigueur at a number of Durango’s favorite eateries. A favorite pet-friendly option is the Ska Brewing Company; the outdoor patio and adjacent grassy area welcomes dogs. Bite into more Durango restaurants.
Lodging: Spending the day exploring Durango can leave you dog tired at night! Many Durango hotels offer pet-friendly accommodations. If adventure is more your speed, you will also find that almost all Durango campgrounds welcome pets, too. Explore Durango lodging options.
Other Things to Consider
Durango leash laws require that all dogs in city limits are on leashes in public areas. Additionally, it’s against the law (and just bad pet parenting) to leave your pooch tethered along city streets.
In La Plata County, including the the San Juan National Forest and Weminuche Wilderness Area, things are a little more lax. Dogs are permitted off leash in these areas, as long as they are under voice control.
