Animas Museum • 3065 W 2nd Ave, Durango, CO 81301
Save the date! On Saturday, September 16th from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Museum, history will really come alive when the Buffalo Soldiers Return to Animas City.
A unit of Buffalo Soldiers from the military outpost in Pagosa Springs, the original Fort Lewis, was bivouacked in the Animas Valley in 1879. Learn more about the history of these African-American soldiers who served on the frontier when we welcome members of the Buffalo Soldiers of the American West. This dedicated organization's mission is to educate the public about the existence of the Ninth and Tenth United State Cavalry, all Black regiments. On Saturday, reenactors will share stories of the Buffalo Soldiers (including Cathay Williams--the only known woman to serve), and show visitors their equipment, uniforms, and supplies. The event is free and open to the public. If you have any accessibility questions, please call the Museum at 970 259-2402. More details to follow.
