Kid Friendly Snowdown Events & Activities

Snowdown Events That Are Perfect For The Whole Family

Due to COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions, the Snowdown organizers have made the decision to cancel Snowdown for 2021. For more details, please read their statement on the Snowdown Facebook page. We look forward to seeing everyone back for another epic Snowdown in 2022.

Snowdown is known for breaking up the winter in Durango with events, competitions and celebrations that span an entire week. In the past few years, Snowdown has been working to become more family friendly and in 2020, 51 events will be fun and welcoming for visitors of all ages. See the schedule below to pick out events perfect for your family Snowdown trip and check out the full Snowdown event calendar for event descriptions, times and locations.

Kid-Friendly Certification

Snowdown has enlisted the help of a local organization to independently determine what events in town will be family friendly. The San Juan Basin Health Department's Operation Healthy Community Division has determined that roughly 1/3 of Snowdown's 2020 events meet the criteria for "Family Fun For All Ages", each of which will be marked with the Operation Healthy Community's Seal of Approval on the official Snowdown event website. You will also find a calendar of these events listed below.

Meet Wilder

Great Outdoors Colorado is bringing their iconic mascot, Wilder, to visit Durango during Snowdown. Wilder encourages kids to get outside and enjoy nature. He is a lovable mix between a mountain goat and Bigfoot and he towers above visitors at a massive 8 feet tall. He will be visiting the Snow Games on Saturday February 1st at 10 AM and he will also ride in the light parade on Friday January 31st.

Event Highlights:

Twisted System

Take on a challenge and prove your intelligence by solving an enigma of exceptionally difficult proportions. Challengers must play alone but this new event is a great opportunity for guests ages 8-100+. Twisted System will last all week long from 11 AM to 7 PM at Conundrum Escape Rooms. Stop by any time to see if you can meet the challenge.

Spellebration

The Durango Adult Education Center hosts Spellebration at the Henry Strater Theatre on Wednesday January 29th. Spellebration is the only spelling showdown of Snowdown. Teams of 3 will compete to see who is the best speller while donning fun costumes and having a blast. There are prizes available for this all ages, family friendly event.

Rock Stop And Roll

The whole family is invited to Durango High School for a performance by the Durango High School Orchestra, aka "The Demon Strings" and a themed costume contest for kids 12 & under. For just $5 a person, you'll get into the concert, enjoy a dinner and dessert buffet and be entered into the Rock n' Roll themed costume contest (if 12 & under).

Snowdown Kid & Teen Follies

The Snowdown Kid Follies are a popular annual Snowdown event that families love. Join in on the fun and watch as Durango's kids sing, dance, perform skits, share their comedic talents and more onstage at the Durango Arts Center. There are multiple performances for both the kid and teen Follies throughout the week, with a Best of Show performance following on February 1st.

A couple of events will be happening all week: the Snowdown theme contest and Twisted System. Other events take place once or a handful of times throughout the week. Below you'll find a schedule of all events that are kid-friendly for Snowdown 2020. If you're coming to break out of winter with your family, these are the best events to attend. Full event descriptions for the kid friendly events can be found on the Snowdown event page.
