Celebrate the wonderful world of fungi at the Durango Mushroom Festival, a celebration devoted to mushrooms in all of their many shapes and sizes. This festival takes place at Purgatory Resort in Durango on August 22nd, 2015 and it includes wine tastings, craft beer samples, mushroom inspired tastings, cooking demonstrations and much more. You will learn all about mushroom varieties and you will even learn tips for how to grow your own. If you are a fan of fungi, this festival will be a blast.
The Mushroom Festival is a great event for families and there are a lot of fun activities that are great for kids. There are also many educational events that will help you to learn more about the fascinating world of mushrooms. For example, the festival features seminars by San Juan Mycology and Majesty Mushrooms, which will teach participants how to identify mushrooms in the wild and how to grow them at home. Also, the local band The Assortment will be playing live music all throughout the festival in order to set the mood.
Two of the top chefs in Durango, will be hosting cooking demonstrations featuring a range of great mushroom inspired dishes. They are Sean Clark, Executive Chef from El Moro Spirits and Tavern and Sergio Verduzco, Chef at East by Southwest. Also, Cream Bean Berry will be creating a mushroom-infused artisan ice cream flavour, so make sure that you try the unique creation for dessert. As well as tasting the delicious mushroom dishes, you will also be able to enjoy plenty of fantastic fine wines and craft beers.
Guided Mushroom Hike
One of the best events of the festival will be a Guided Mushroom Hunt on at 9:30am. The owner of Majesty Mushrooms, Chris Ricci, will be educating participants on the various types of edible and non-edible mushrooms. This hike will take place in the forests surrounding the resort and you will have a chance to discover delicious wild mushrooms such as Shaggy Manes, Boletus, Chanterelles and many more.
Ricci will offer expert tips on spotting these mushrooms and you will be able to take home any that you find and cook them. The guided walk will begin at the front desk of Purgatory Lodge at 9:30am and guests are recommended to wear appropriate footwear and bring a small knife for cutting mushrooms. The cost for taking part in the hike is $40 per person.
